I just found out one my closest friends broke up with his longtime girlfriend whom he was (and is) in love with, over religious differences

I swear, if there is a god, and he's seeing the ridiculously stupid shit that religion causes and is sitting up there not doing anything, he is sooo getting an earful when I die.

AngieAlaniz His come back to you would be: "Your right, and I'm sick of saying the same thing over and over again"

nothingprofound Apparently, he didn't love her enough to overlook the differences.

infurl

infurl For what it's worth, I'm a dedicated Atheist and my wife is a devout Christian. We've been happily married for more than twenty years and it still just keeps getting better and better.

Whether it's real or imaginary, religion fills a genuine need for many people. Although it is frequently used as a justification for various forms of oppression, ignorance and stupidity, I don't think that you can blame religion for those things.

Jayme

Jayme Sometimes problems arise when children are involved.

TheBoo @ angie - then I'd wack him over the head and demand that he get up off his lazy divine butt and do something if he's so sick of hearing about it :p

TheBoo

TheBoo @ np - I'm soo telling him that next time he mopes to me about how much he misses her.

TheBoo

TheBoo @ infurl - I am really glad to hear that. Really, I am. I always though religion was one of the most powerful forces of division. I'm really glad that you and your wife are such a fine example of the contrary.

TheBoo

TheBoo @ jayme - no children involved thankfully. But it still breaks my heart nonetheless.

efuller

efuller Hey, I'm a child involved in a marriage between two people who do not share a faith. My mom is a devout christian and my dad is an atheist. What matters is that they both deeply respect each other and their choices. Mom would take me to church every sunday, and my dad only talked about religion when he was directly asked.

TheBoo I'm so using the examples of people like infurl and efuller to my friend next time I talk to him. Thanks guys.

Agit8r

Agit8r So what was the disagreement about?

infurl

infurl It also occurs to me that my wife's parents are Catholic and Protestant. They've been happily married for fifty years even though back home in Northern Ireland Catholics and Protestants have been slaughtering each other for centuries.

@efuller I don't even know what my children's religious beliefs are. It's their business. One of them goes to church with my wife and one of them doesn't. I'll talk about anything with them if they ask, or show signs that they want to talk about something, but it's not a topic that's ever come up.

TheBoo @ Agit8r - something about differing biblical interpretations o_0

Jayme

Jayme The opportunity always comes up to discuss God with my children. Looking at an interesting animal, beautiful sunset, admiring how we are wonderfully made....and they are always asking questions. The thing is if you dont answer them the world will. A person who believes in God will certainly try to train their kids in the way they should go.

infurl It has been revealed to me that Santa Claus is the one true god. Henceforth all non-believers shall be deemed naughty and won't receive any presents.

AngieAlaniz

AngieAlaniz @infurl - That’s pretty awesome and unbelievable I’d say, since you and your wife are so different when it comes to your beliefs. Personally, I think it speaks volumes in your wife’s behalf.
Something that does often amaze me is that through out history the biggest motivated killings were either because of religion or by the desire to destroy religion.

@TheBoo That’s plan crazy Boo, I wouldn’t recommend hitting anyone over the head who’s a million times bigger then you.

@NothingProfound could be or scared weenie

AngieAlaniz

AngieAlaniz BOO - love your background. Wish I was there now. :)

infurl

infurl @AngieAlaniz when you say "it speaks volumes on my wife's behalf" what exactly do you mean?

5/15/10

AngieAlaniz

AngieAlaniz @infurl .....I'll let you ponder on that one a while. ;)
Ask me next week.

5/15/10

infurl

infurl There's really no need. You've revealed enough about yourself already.

5/15/10

AngieAlaniz

AngieAlaniz haha, ok : D ....but just in case you missed it, I meant that in a nice way.
