Let Them Build It

Regarding the mosque near ground zero, I say let them build it. But across the street, we should put a topless bar, called "You MECCA Me Hot". Next to that, a gay bar called "The TURBAN Cowboy" and next to that, a PORK-rib restaurant called "IRAQ o' Ribs". And a check cashing center .........called..."IRAN out of money" Now let......'s see who's really tolerant! Repost if you agree

Let Them Build It

photographworks I cannot understand the mentality of the people who want to build it and who do not see their own insensitivity.

That distances me from them and for that reason I am against it being built.

agapistudios it's a quote going around facebook from a fairly large number of people ... I thought it was poignant in the sense that no other discussion lately seems to be

photographworks I understand that you do not really think Ground Zero is an appropriate place for a mosque. I just think that there is a fine line between telling someone you feel hurt one the one hand, and illustrating that with a jibe that ridicules the ones who you feel have hurt you. I think the mecca/pork etc. jibes cross that line.

LyndaLehmann

LyndaLehmann I think it would be fine for them to build it if they were just as accepting of Western customs, establishments, and institutions, as we in America tend to be. No culture or religion needs to lay claim to more than its share of accommodation/self-indulgence in the world.

Butterose

Butterose @LyndaLehmann America is the only country based on the premise of religious freedom. It's guaranteed to all residents by our Constitution. I may not feel that Ground Zero is an appropriate place for a mosque under the circumstances, but Muslims proposing to build mosques in other cities in America are being met with vocal resistance. The people are fighting against them in California and in Tennessee. I don't believe we're as accepting of other religions as we'd like to believe.

legbamel

legbamel I don't believe that this sort of hate speech is finding acceptance in a country that pretends to be against it. This post saddens me because it's and overreaction that delights in proposed cruelty.

libdrone

libdrone what I find striking is that the NT mayor and the people in the neighborhood where the proposed Community Center is to be built are all fine with it. The flames all seem to be coming from people who don't live there.

scribadiva "As recently revealed, the largest shareholder (or 2nd largest, by some accounts) of News Corporation, Fox News' (the network that has stoked hatred against the proposed Islamic community center near Ground Zero) parent company, is Rupert Murdoch's business partner, a Muslim (Alwaleed bin Talal) who is th head of the Islamic organization that is funding what Fox News refers to as the "terrorist mosque" in New York (and other "terrorist" mosques around the world as identified by Fox News)." Quoted in my post http://www.needleinanewgroove.com/2010/10/lots-of-.... It covers the essentials to understand what's really happening.

timethief

timethief IMO this issue is one of property ownership, and the right to develop of property within the confines of existing zoning ordinances. That is the ONLY issue here under the law. The rest of the hullabuloo is contrived to deflect attention from the actual issue.

1. The "sacred-ground" and "sensitivities" argument doesn't hold up nor does the bullshit being spieled about a mosque being built. The proposed community center is not on the ground of the former World Trade Center. It's location two blocks away and the proposed community center will be open to the public.Â

2. The property owners have the legal right to build on their land just as any and all other Americans can do. The fact remains that you can’t legally stop people from obeying the law.

3. Abandoning the foundational principles underlying 1st Amendment and the American Consitution by advocating and/or engaging in emotional blackmail, propaganda, hate mongering and fear mongering aimed to suvert the legal land use and development that the property owners are entitled to.

If the property owners do bend to that kind of abusive rhetoric and behavior engaged in by a minoritry of citizens, who are not focused on the actual issue, and who live in a country that professes and has enshrines equality under the law in their Constitution and Constitutional Amendments, then what would that say about America and the reality of equal treatment under the law?

LyndaLehmann

LyndaLehmann It's refreshing to hear rational discussion on this. I'm so sick of all sides spewing their very subjective "gut feelings" and fears as if they are some sort of objective reality.

I think you're right, TiTi, we have to uphold the law as the armature on which our society is built. Regardless of "sensitivities" and yes, very tragic circumstances and events.

scribadiva Property Right about the Mosque? Do you know who bought it? http://www.needleinanewgroove.com/2010/10/lots-of-... it's not a conspiracy theory; Murdoch admits it.

@scribadiva - agapistudios knows what's factual and what's not. This same subject was posted into multple BC forum threads & was clarified there.

After 9/11 attacks, islamophobia began to take shape in the collective consciousness of a minority of Americans and the media have cranked out their propaganda fueled by far right wing bigots ever since.

scribadiva Beth, sweetie, you were just being sarcastic, right? It's NOT a MOSQUE. There WAS a MOSQUE in the World Trade Center. Muslims died along with Christians, Jews...absolutely every religion. THAT'S WHY IT'S CALLED THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. Get it??? THAT'S WHAT A SMALL BAND OF IDIOT IDEOLOGuES did TO ALL OF US. You get that, right? I know people who were hurt. I've read up on this. AND IT'S MY HOME. You are just being cynical, right?

scribadiva TT: I agree with every thing you said. The recent development, admitted by every one involved, including Carl Rove, That the owners of Fox News are the ones that Bought the building. And they started the hate mongering. Manhattanites, I'm sorry, I don't care what they are, they do not attack. We're not talking about Ocean Park, Brownsville or Crown Heights, or anwhere in the other boroughs. (although the Bronx is pretty cool.) I'm talking and she's obviously not interested? I consider Beth a good friend, and I'll talk to her later. RIGHT NOW, GOOGLE READER IS FREAKING TOO MANY PEOPLE OUT, AND GOOGLE ISN'T LISTENING, SO I HAVE TO GO FIND THE GOOGLE GURU AND ASK HIM TO STAND UP. Excuse me ladies, see ya lata, alligatas.
